Sight Words for Preschool

Our littlest is Vanna, she is four and so we are doing preschool.
I love preschool!

Everything we do is colorful and loud and fun, and because I've already done it with Kesia there is relatively little for me to prep. I try to reuse all of my school materials in one way or another.

We are using This Reading Mama's 'Reading the Alphabet' curriculum.

(thisreadingmama.com)

This is what I used with Kesia at the same level and she is a CHAMP reader, so we are using it again with Vanna (so nice to have a guinea pig child).

Among other things, the curriculum determines our sight word of the week and also has some really awesome sight word worksheets and games.
This curriculum rocks!

Once we have established our sight word of the week, we like to do some activities and games using that sight word and the ones we have learnt already. We love a hands on approach to preschool!

You can find so many sight word activities ideas online (can we appreciate Pinterest anymore) but here are some of our favorites:

1. Our Caterpillar Wall

I used this with Kesia before moving her onto a word wall, and now Vanna is very proud of her own "Mrs Caterpillar".

She grows with a new word every week and Vanna reads her every day, repetition is the key with sight words, especially in the beginning.

2. Sight Word Fishing

Vanna's best game!
She fishes for the sight word fishies (using my very professional and awesome magnet fishing rod).
Then she reads the word before feeding it to hungry Mr Shark.

Our shark speaks Spanish and the fishies are muy deliciosa!

3. Ball Slam

This one is easy peasy - stick the sight words to the wall with some prestick (not sure what this is called overseas, it is the sticky stuff we use to put things on the wall, temporarily).

I then call out a word and little miss throws a soft ball at it.

4. Spelling with Bottle Caps

I collected plastic bottle caps from soft drink and water bottles, and got my family to do the same. Some white dot stickers and a marker later - letter tokens to use for word building.

These get tons of use from both of my littles!

5. Spelling with Magnets

Magnets are fun - so this is a winner!

6. Spelling with Letter Stamps

Stamping is a great fine motor activity, and playing with stamps is awesome.

7. Spelling with Craft Sticks

Same Same but Different

These spelling games are also great because they require the little to scan all the letters and find the one they are looking for, good for letter recognition and tracking skills.

8. Rainbow Write

Vanna loves to write lately and will use any excuse to get in some writing practice, add colors and BAM - one happy preschooler!

9. Erase the Word

I simply call out the sight words, Vanna identifies them and then rubs them off the board. My kids love erasing things.

We use the white board or the chalk board for this activity.

10. Word Hunt

I 'hide' the sight words around the house for Vanna to find and once she has the word and reads it, she can cross the word off her list (we all know how satisfying that is). I hide them in plain sight so that the activity moves along swiftly, my children take forever to find things out of their direct line of eyesight 😛

That is it folks!
Our top ten sight word activities for preschool, hope you found them useful?

With love,
Chelsea
